My Principles

15 Leadership Principles

These are some of the ever evolving principles I've acquired after 13+ years of building and leading teams.

Focus On The Customer

Your whole team needs to understand the customer, their needs and pain points. The better everyone understands the customer, the more aligned the whole business is.

Everyone Is An Owner

Everyone should be an owner, whatever their role. Give permission for people to own their work, it allows them to grow, feel autonomous and ultimately to feel more fulfilled.

Excellence As Standard

The quality of a product or service is only as good as the sum of its parts. Ensure that every aspect lives up to the standard you'd expect if you were the customer.

Find the Gaps

The best team members are always asking questions. How can this be better? How can I better understand this? What am I missing? How are other people solving this? Who has relevant experience I can leverage?

Be Kind, Always

Remember that we're all human. We all have struggles. Things can affect us in ways we don't even understand ourselves. Show up for your team, be available, and make sure people who need support can get it.

Take Action Often

Prioritise action over lengthy decision making processes. Action provides real world feedback that gives you direction, confidence and momentum.

Bootstrapper Mindset

Behaving as if your resources are constrained forces you to prioritise your spending and maximize the ROI of everything that you do.

Only Great Talent

Hire team members that embody the skills, principles and attitude that align with you and your team. To compromise means losing time, money and you risk disrupting the delicate balance of your teams.

You Don't Know Everything

Assume you know less than you think you do. Surround yourself with people you trust, who have diverse perspectives that can constructively challenge your thinking.

Stay Curious

The sign of a great team member is their curiosity about everything both inside and outside of the business. They are never done learning and enjoy sharing what they learn along the way.

Keep Simplifying

Complexity is the enemy of progress. Approach every project with simplification in mind, breaking down tasks into actionable steps with clear outcomes.

Build Trust and Credibility

Trust needs to be earned. In your team, with your audience and your customers. Put your thoughts in front of people often, so they can understand you and what you have to say.

Be A Great Employer

Have fun at work and make it easy for others to have fun too. Show empathy in everything that you do. Let your teams know you care about their personal success.

Always Be Communicating

Transparent and regular communication is key. Teach team members to communicate frequently and effectively. So much can be lost in translation. Misalignment can damage morale and slow you down.

Deliver Value Fast

What is your customer's time to value? And how well are you solving customer pain points? Become the best at delivering value and make customers aware of the value you give them.
“I’ve worked with Mikey both under his management, and alongside him in a leadership team. His natural capacity for understanding people can’t be understated, and is combined with an instinctively strategic outlook.

His nuanced understanding of both individual and business needs makes him an impressive and well-respected leader, with a particular ability to define and implement scalable processes in a thoughtful and team-centred way.

His example has taught me (and many others) not only how to manage growing teams effectively and with authenticity - but how to lead a business consistently and sustainably in the context of unpredictability that characterises startup life.”
