Mikey Howe

COO, founding partner, Head of product

For the past 7 years I have been COO, Head of Product & Founding Partner, helping to build Escape the City, one of the UK's most successful job board platforms and education businesses. In that time we have grown to 350,000+ registered users and 7,000+ employers hiring regularly through our platform. Escape the City is used by some of the most exciting and progressive companies on the planet including Airbnb, Deliveroo, Crowdcube, Kiva, Virgin Galactic, Monzo and Transferwise.

We built Escape the City to connect talented professionals who are stuck in unfulfilling corporate jobs, to the most exciting opportunities in the world. Since starting in 2010 we have helped thousands of people find work they love through our job board, events, workshops, courses and festivals. We were named one of the UK's Top 100 Startups, have been featured in hundreds of publications, and have a user base covering nearly every country.

Although my core role has been as Head of Product, I have experienced every role as we've grown from 3 to up to 30 people in the team, acquiring a deep experience in sales, marketing, operations, product management, finance and design. I enjoy growing and leading teams, designing and launching products, and executing growth strategies. I am passionate about startups and tech. I regularly speak on topics around entrepreneurship, startups, tech and growth, at companies such as General Assembly, Google Campus and Soho House.

The Escape Manifesto

Published 2013 with Capstone/Wiley

Rob, Dom and Mikey were fed up with the corporate treadmill. When they decided to change careers, they looked for a website to help them escape – except there wasn’t one. So they started their own. 7 years later and they have started a movement called Escape the City. Over 300,000 people have joined the platform in pursuit of exciting and unconventional careers. They are the first online start-up in the world to raise more than £600,000 in investment equity crowdfunding – and they did this entirely from their own members.

The Escape Manifesto is the book that the guys wish they had read five years ago on the London Underground when they were commuting back and forth from their corporate cubicles. It is an inspirational call to action, packed with practical advice and encouragement. If you work in a corporate job that doesn’t make you tick and you have ever wondered whether there is more to life, this book is for you. Step off the corporate treadmill – find an exciting job, start your own business, or go on a big adventure. Stop dreaming, start planning and do something different!

I’ve worked with Mikey both under his management, and alongside him in a leadership team. His natural capacity for understanding people can’t be understated, and is combined with an instinctively strategic outlook.

His nuanced understanding of both individual and business needs makes him an impressive and well-respected leader, with a particular ability to define and implement scalable processes in a thoughtful and team-centred way.

His example has taught me (and many others) not only how to manage growing teams effectively and with authenticity - but how to lead a business consistently and sustainably in the context of unpredictability that characterises startup life.
